What to expect

Three façades, three centuries of work

Your tour starts outside the basilica, where your guide walks you through the three façades. The Nativity Façade is Gaudí's own work, carved with turtles, birds, and over a hundred species of plants drawn from the Catalan countryside. The Passion Façade is angular and spare, finished decades after his death. The Glory Façade is still taking shape, the newest addition to a building that has outlived every architect who has worked on it.

Inside the basilica, a forest made of stone

Walk past the lines and into the nave, where stone columns branch overhead and light shifts through stained glass panels that Gaudí oriented to catch the sun differently at every hour. Your guide explains the symbolism woven into every surface, from the geometry of the columns to the precise angle of each window. At certain times of day, the nave fills with reds and golds on one side and blues and greens on the other, the light moving across the stone like a slow clock. This is the space that took a rural Catalan artisan and placed him among the most influential architects of the twentieth century.
