What to expect
The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill: past the rope lines
Your Rome forum tour begins in Ancient Rome's political and religious center. Your guide will walk you through the temples, senate buildings, and public squares where the Republic and then the Empire played out over a thousand years. On Palatine Hill, you'll leave the open-air ruins and enter one of the Super Sites, the restricted areas behind the gates where the Forum's only surviving interiors are preserved. Depending on availability, you may enter the House of Augustus, where frescoes painted over 2,000 years ago still cover the walls in reds, blues, and yellows as vivid as the day they dried. On other days, you’ll visit the Santa Maria Antiqua, Rome’s first Christian monument, or the Domus Tiberiana, the first imperial palace.
The Colosseum: Over 50,000 seats, and the stories behind every one
From the Forum, you'll enter the Colosseum . Your guide will walk you through the first and second tiers, the levels where Rome's citizens and elite sat to watch the games. You'll hear what those days actually looked like, from the animal hunts in the morning to the executions at midday to the gladiator fights in the afternoon. More than 50,000 people could fill these seats and empty them again in minutes through 80 arched exits the Romans built into the walls.
"The House of Augustus is the moment nobody expects. The colors on those walls look like they were finished last week."

"Most people come for the Colosseum. But the Super Sites in the Forum are what they talk about after."
