Overview
Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast are two of the most visited places in southern Italy, and getting to both from Rome in a single day on your own is close to impossible. This day trip handles every detail: round-trip private transport, an archaeologist-led walking tour of Pompeii, a scenic drive along the coast, and free time in Positano with nothing left to organize.
- •Walk the original stone streets of Pompeii with an archaeologist who brings a 2,000-year-old city back to life
- •Step inside preserved Roman houses where frescoes are still vivid on the walls
- •Drive the Amalfi Coast road in a private minibus small enough to take you directly into Positano
- •Spend two unhurried hours in Positano: swim, eat a seafood lunch, or browse the leather sandal shops
- •See Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day, something that would have taken a private driver or two full days to manage alone

What to expect
Pompeii: a city frozen, then brought back to life
You enter through the ancient gates and onto streets still marked by chariot tracks. Your archaeologist guide walks you through the city as the people who once lived there did. You’ll see the Forum, the baths with their original heating systems, and preserved houses where frescoes are still vivid after two millennia. There are the bakeries with original stone counters and the amphitheater where concerts are still held today. Then the plaster casts: figures frozen in the positions they died in, and one of the reasons Pompeii stays with you long after you leave.
The Amalfi Coast drive: cliffs, lemons, and the road itself
From Pompeii, the minibus heads south along one of the most celebrated coastal roads in Europe. Limestone cliffs drop into turquoise water, lemon trees are perched on terraced groves, and pastel villages stack impossibly along the hillside. Your tour leader points out the fishing villages and the history of the maritime republics as the road winds toward Positano. Because the bus is small enough to drive directly into town, you step off where the action is, not at a transfer point on the highway.
Note: In low season (November through March), many Positano businesses are closed. During this period, the tour visits Sorrento instead, with plenty of options for lunch, shopping, and exploring. On some departures, the itinerary may also run in reverse.
They've been in ancient Rome, now suddenly it's cliffs and lemons and the bluest water they've ever seen.
Cosimo,
