Overview
Florence has two of the world's most important art museums, a cathedral that took 140 years to complete, and a historic center where almost every street has a Renaissance story attached to it. Fitting all of that into one day on your own means long ticket lines and a lot of guesswork. This private Florence in a day tour takes care of both, with pre-reserved entry to the Accademia and Uffizi, an expert guide, and a route that connects the art to the city that produced it.
- •Stand in front of Michelangelo's David at the Accademia Gallery, seventeen feet of marble carved from a block two other sculptors had already given up on
- •Trace the development of Renaissance painting inside the Uffizi Gallery, from Botticelli's Birth of Venus to Caravaggio's Medusa
- •Step inside Piazza della Signoria, Florence's open-air gallery of political power, mythological sculpture, and medieval grudges
- •Cross the Ponte Vecchio, still lined with the goldsmiths' workshops that have occupied it since the sixteenth century
- •Rub the nose of Il Porcellino at the Mercato Nuovo, where Florence's leather and artisan trades carry on beneath a sixteenth-century loggia

What to expect
The Accademia Gallery: face to face with the David
Your day begins with pre-reserved entry to the Accademia Gallery. Before you reach the David, you'll walk through the Galleria dei Prigioni, where Michelangelo's unfinished Prisoners appear to struggle out of raw marble. Your guide will explain the technique that makes them so unsettling. Then the David appears, seventeen feet of white marble, and the room goes quiet around it.
Florence's historic center: the city the Medici built
From the Accademia, you'll walk through the streets that connect Florence's major landmarks. Your guide sets the pace and chooses the route based on your group's interests, but the walk typically includes the Duomo and Baptistery (seen from outside), Piazza della Repubblica, and Piazza della Signoria. The Signoria alone holds the spot where Savonarola was executed, a copy of the David in its original outdoor position, and the Loggia dei Lanzi with Cellini's bronze Perseus lifting Medusa's head.
"Most people walk right past the Prisoners to get to the David. I always stop there first. Once you've seen what Michelangelo left unfinished, the David hits differently."
Chiara,
WalksDevour art historian
"Forty-five rooms is a lot of art. I show my guests the pieces that changed how people thought about painting, and I explain why."
