What to expect
Aperitivo in the Oltrarno: Chianti, crostini, and the neighborhood regulars
You’ll begin in a small enoteca just off Santo Spirito, the kind of place with no social media presence and regulars who linger over evening wine. With a glass of Chianti Classico in hand, you’ll enjoy pecorino, local salumi, and seasonal bruschette as your guide introduces Florentine aperitivo—and why, in Tuscany, the wine always comes before the menu.
The wine window: Prosecco served through stone
Next, you’ll sip Prosecco served through a centuries-old stone wine window—one of the very few still in operation today. First used during the plague, these small openings allowed wine to be passed safely between seller and customer. Hundreds remain across Florence, but only a handful are still active—and this is the only one in the Oltrarno.
"I found most of these places before I started creating our food tours. They're where I go with my own friends on a night off."
Chiara,

"The steak stop used to be a convent. Napoleon's sister lived here. The waiters dress like it's still the 18th century."
