What to expect
The Vatican Museums: a walk through the Pope’s palaces
There is a lot of ground to cover at the Vatican Museums, and your guide knows exactly which parts of it matter. From the Pinecone Courtyard you move into the Pio-Clementino galleries, where the Laocoön writhes in marble and the Apollo Belvedere stands in a stillness that has held for two thousand years. Then the long galleries unfold: the Candelabra, with their heavy woven tapestries catching the light, and the Gallery of Maps, with gilded ceilings and vivid cartographic panels.
The Raphael Rooms: the masterpiece most visitors rush past
Most people cross through the Raphael Rooms on their way to the Sistine Chapel without stopping. Your guide slows down. The School of Athens fills an entire wall, and with a small group you can step back far enough to see it whole. Look closer and the faces appear: Leonardo as Plato, Michelangelo brooding on the steps, and Raphael himself watching quietly from the edge of the frame.
"I watch people walk quickly through the Gallery of Maps on their way to the Sistine Chapel. Then the gold catches the light and they stop. That's the gallery I never get tired of."

"There are four miles of galleries in there. Nobody can see all of it. But I can show you the pieces that stay with you, and explain why they've stayed with me."
