Overview
In 2012, this was the first food tour in Madrid. More than a decade later, Alfonso is still behind the counter, and Jesús is still carving ham at the same stall.
- •Sit down with Alfonso for a churro dipped in thick hot chocolate, Spain's most famous breakfast, at the neighborhood spot most visitors walk straight past
- •Step into a Galician bakery bringing the bread traditions of northwest Spain to the capital
- •Hear the story behind a wine and cheese shop whose family played a quiet role in Madrid's anti-fascist underground, then taste the cheese
- •Walk through Mercado de Antón Martín with four vendor stops: seven varieties of olive, hand-carved jamón from Jesús, extra virgin olive oil, and seasonal fruit
- •Eat a bocadillo de calamares at the bar with the longest line on Plaza Mayor, without waiting in it
What's included
- 15+ tastings across 8 family-run stops (enough for breakfast and lunch)
- Wine, vermouth, and drinks included
- Local English-speaking guide
- Guided walking tour of two historic neighborhoods

What to expect
Alfonso's churros and chocolate: where the morning begins
The tour starts in Plaza Santa Ana and walks through the Barrio de las Letras. Past Cervantes' house and walk through streets where Madrid's literary history lives on before arriving at Alfonso's churro shop. This is not one of the big tourist-facing churrerías. The churros are fried fresh, the hot chocolate is thick enough to stand a spoon in, and Alfonso is behind the counter. Your guide will explain why this is breakfast in Madrid, not dessert.
The Galician bakery: bread from rural Spain
A few streets away, a small, independently owned bakery brought sourdough traditions from Galicia to a neighborhood increasingly full of chains. Still here, still baking, still supplying the street.
Dietary Needs: Please let us know when you book. We can adapt the tour for vegetarians, pescatarians, pregnant guests, and those with dairy-free requirements or non-celiac gluten sensitivities. See the FAQs for more details.
"The vendors still remember our very first groups. That's the kind of relationship you can't fake."
